Vicarage Road Stadium

Home of Watford FC since 1922 — Elton John Stand, capacity 21,500

Watford's football ground sits in the south-west of the town, ten minutes' walk from the High Street. The current stadium was largely rebuilt in stages between 1986 and 2014, but the site has been continuously used since 1922 and retains the slightly cramped, intimate feel of an English town club ground.

The Watford FC museum inside the stadium tells the story of the Elton John years, the Graham Taylor revolution, and the more recent yo-yo with the Premier League. Match-day tickets are easier to come by than for any London Premier League club. Stadium tours run on selected non-match Sundays — book through the club.

A story
Elton John, who grew up in nearby Pinner and supported Watford as a boy, became chairman of the club in 1976 and personally bankrolled Graham Taylor's rise from the Fourth Division to the FA Cup final in nine seasons. The main stand at Vicarage Road bears his name; he still owns a small ceremonial stake in the club.
