North Downs Walks

Walking on chalk downland with panoramic views across the Weald

Woldingham sits at the heart of some of the best walking in Surrey, on the chalk ridge of the North Downs. Tracks run through open downland, beechwood, and old farmland in all directions. The North Downs Way National Trail passes within a few kilometres of the village, connecting to longer routes eastward into Kent. On a clear day, the viewpoints south of the village look out across the Sussex Weald. Woldingham station is a useful start and end point — the walk from the station up onto the ridge and back takes about two hours at an easy pace.

A story
The North Downs is a chalk ridge running east-west across Surrey and Kent, formed over millions of years as sediment deposited in a shallow tropical sea. The chalk grassland above Woldingham supports plants and insects that have disappeared from most of lowland England — rare orchids grow on the undisturbed slopes, and the springy turf is the kind that has been grazed for thousands of years.
