Holne Bridge

Holne Bridge is a medieval stone bridge over the River Dart, a short drive or a longer walk from Ashburton through the Dart Valley. The bridge dates from the medieval period and is one of the finest examples of Dartmoor bridge-building — narrow, hump-backed, and built from local granite with characteristic Dartmoor solidity.

The surrounding woodland along the Dart is particularly beautiful in autumn. The path from the bridge along the river toward Newbridge makes an excellent walk, passing through sessile oak woodland of the kind that once covered much of Devon. The river below the bridge is deep and clear — wild swimming is popular here in summer, though the current can be strong after rain.

A story
Holne Bridge is a Grade II* listed medieval structure — one of the best-preserved packhorse bridges on Dartmoor. The bridge carried tin from the moor to Ashburton's stannary for centuries, and the marks of laden packhorses can still be seen worn into the stone of the parapet.
