River Ashburn

The Ashburn is the river that gives Ashburton its name, flowing through the lower part of the town and down to join the Dart near Buckfastleigh. In the town itself the river runs alongside the lower streets and is a pleasant presence — audible from the main shopping street, accessible from several points below the town hall.

The best swimming is further downstream toward the Dart confluence, where the water deepens and the banks open out. Locals know the spots; a walk downstream from town will find them. The Ashburn runs year-round and the flow is fastest in winter and spring; summer swimming is generally calm. The river's path through the valley below the town is a good afternoon walk.
