Foreland Point

Foreland Point is a rocky headland projecting into the Bristol Channel about two miles northwest of Countisbury, reached by a footpath from the A39. The views from the point are the widest in this part of Exmoor: west to Lynmouth and beyond, north to the Welsh coast, east along the Devon cliffs.

The walk from Countisbury across the clifftop takes about 45 minutes each way. The descent to the lighthouse itself is steep but manageable. The contrast between the exposed headland and the sheltered valleys of Brendon and Oare — a few miles back — gives a good sense of the range of landscape packed into this small corner of Exmoor.

A story
Foreland Point is the most northerly point on the Devon coast and the place where the Bristol Channel narrows enough that the Welsh coast — barely twenty miles away — is visible on a clear day. The Trinity House lighthouse here was built in 1900, replacing an earlier structure, and remains operational. On still summer evenings the stretch of water between here and Lundy Island is good for spotting porpoises.
