One of England's great Norman churches, begun in 1089 and extended over the following centuries. The nave retains its solid Romanesque columns, but it's the Perpendicular Gothic choir and cloisters — added in the fourteenth century — that stop people in their tracks. The fan-vaulted cloisters are among the earliest and most elaborate in the country.
The tomb of Edward II, murdered at nearby Berkeley Castle in 1327, became a pilgrimage site almost immediately after his death. The offerings funded much of the subsequent rebuilding.
The cathedral also served as Hogwarts in the early Harry Potter films, which brings a certain kind of visitor to its cloisters.
