Sherborne Castle is the newer of the town's two castles, built by Sir Walter Raleigh in the 1590s after he decided the medieval fortress next door was too gloomy for comfortable living. Later owners expanded it into the country house seen today.
The house opens seasonally, but the grounds are the main reason to come on a bright day. They turn the castle pair into a proper half-day walk from the abbey end of town.
