Double Waters

Where the Walkham meets the Tavy in a deep wooded valley south of Tavistock, Double Waters is one of the prettiest spots in west Devon. The two rivers join below steep oak-clad slopes and there is a long shingle bar at the confluence that is good for paddling on a hot day.

The classic walk down to it starts at Grenofen Bridge on the Plymouth road. Follow the south bank of the Walkham downstream through Buckland Monachorum parish — about ninety minutes one way, mostly level, with a couple of steep sections. Spring brings bluebells and wild garlic; summer brings dippers and the occasional otter. Bring a packed lunch from the Pannier Market.
