The bare summit of Dunkery is the high point of Exmoor and one of the great viewpoints of southern England. The hill is heather-clad and treeless, with a Bronze Age cairn at the top now ringed with a low circle of stones. On a clear day the panorama is exceptional; in cloud and rain — which is most days — the place has a bleak grandeur all its own.
The walk to the summit is straightforward — a half-hour climb from the car park on Dunkery Hill on the Wheddon Cross to Porlock road. Longer approaches from the south or east cross some of the best heather moorland in southern England, especially in late August when the hill is purple with bloom.
