Winsford Hill is the broad open ridge of moorland that rises immediately south of the village. The summit is just over 400 metres and unmarked, but the panoramic views — across the Barle valley to Dunkery, west to the Brendon Hills, south toward Dartmoor — are some of the best in central Exmoor.
The hill is grazed by the famous Exmoor ponies, a hardy semi-wild breed that has been on these moors since at least the medieval period and probably much longer. The Bronze Age burial mounds of the Wambarrows, three low cairns close together near the summit, are easy to miss but mark this as a place that has been important for at least four thousand years.
