A medieval moated manor house in the Forest of Arden, about nine miles south of Solihull and in the care of the National Trust. The house is unusually complete and authentic — it has been in more or less continuous use since the 15th century and was never substantially remodelled. The moat, great hall, and chapel survive intact, giving it an atmosphere that heavily restored properties struggle to match.
The Catholic history is the most compelling thread: the Ferrers family remained Catholic through the Reformation and paid heavy fines rather than convert. The priest holes are accessible and visible, and the guides who explain them are worth listening to. The grounds are pleasant and the tearoom in the courtyard is one of the better National Trust cafes in the region.
