The Dark Hedges

A tunnel-like avenue of old beech trees near Bushmills, famous for its brooding photographs.

The Dark Hedges are a short avenue of mature beech trees near Gracehill House, planted in the eighteenth century and now one of the most photographed places in County Antrim. The interlaced branches make a natural tunnel over the road, especially atmospheric in low light or mist.

Its fame has brought crowds, traffic restrictions, and plenty of over-composed photos, so expectations matter. Go early or late, park where signed, and treat it as a brief scenic detour from Bushmills and the Causeway Coast rather than a full outing by itself.
