Dunluce Castle

Dunluce Castle perches on a dramatic basalt outcrop above the North Antrim coast, connected to the mainland by a small bridge and separated from the sea cliffs on both sides. The ruins are extensive — the medieval castle was occupied by the MacDonnell clan and was the seat of the Earls of Antrim for centuries — and the coastal setting is extraordinary, with views along the Causeway Coast in both directions.

The site includes ruins of a town that grew up inside the outer walls, and a museum covering the history of the castle and the MacDonnell family. Some scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed here. Entry is charged; the castle is about five minutes' drive west of Bushmills. The approach along the coast road is one of the best drives in Northern Ireland.

A story
In 1639, part of the castle's kitchen fell into the sea during a dinner party — the sea having eroded the cliff beneath it. Several kitchen staff fell with it. The then-owner's wife, who had been uncomfortable living on the cliff edge, took this as her cue to demand a move to the mainland. The castle was largely abandoned shortly afterwards, the kitchen incident apparently the final persuasion required.
