Donaghmore High Cross

Tenth-century carved sandstone high cross in the centre of Donaghmore village

The high cross in the centre of Donaghmore village, four kilometres northwest of Dungannon, dates from the tenth century and is one of the finest surviving carved crosses in Ulster. Standing about 4.7 metres tall, it is carved with biblical scenes — the Adam and Eve story on one face, the Crucifixion on the head, and various Old Testament panels on the others.

The cross stands on the site of an early Christian monastery founded by Saint Patrick. The pieces of the cross were broken up at the Reformation and rediscovered in fragments in the eighteenth century; the cross was reassembled and re-erected on its present base in 1869. Free, open access at the main road junction.
