Cloughmore Stone

The Cloughmore Stone — "the big stone" — is an enormous granite boulder perched on the slopes of Slieve Martin, high above the village of Rostrevor a few miles east of Warrenpoint. It weighs about 30 tons and sits in an exposed position with sweeping views over Carlingford Lough toward the Cooley peninsula and down the Irish Sea.

Getting up to the stone is a short but steep walk from Kilbroney Park through Rostrevor Forest. The trail climbs through mature oaks and conifers and emerges onto open hillside; allow about 90 minutes return. On a clear day, you can see across to the Isle of Man and down toward Dundalk Bay. The walk is one of the best short hikes in this corner of the country.

A story
Local legend has it that the 30-ton granite boulder was hurled across Carlingford Lough by the Irish giant Finn McCool during a fight with a Scottish rival, Ruscaire, who Finn then killed and buried beneath it. Geologists are less romantic — the stone is a glacial erratic, dropped here by retreating ice about 10,000 years ago.
