Ynys-hir Reserve is one of the strongest nature stops around Machynlleth, spread across the edge of the Dyfi estuary where woodland, saltmarsh, pools, and open views sit close together. Birdwatchers come for waders, ducks, warblers, raptors, and seasonal movement through the estuary, but the place is not only for people with binoculars.
The reserve is good because it changes as you walk: one path feels enclosed and wooded, the next opens onto reedbeds and big Welsh sky. Check tide and season if birds are your focus, and bring waterproof footwear after rain; the landscape is part of the pleasure, but it is also very much a wetland.
