Monnow Bridge

Monnow Bridge is Monmouth's signature sight: a thirteenth-century stone bridge with a gate tower still standing over the road. Britain once had many fortified bridge towers, but this is the only surviving example where the tower remains on the bridge itself.

It now carries pedestrians rather than through traffic, which makes it easy to stop, look back along the river, and appreciate how strongly the bridge once controlled the western entrance to town.
