The Kymin

The Kymin is the hilltop escape above Monmouth, with nine acres of woodland and open ground looking over the Wye Valley, Monmouthshire, and, on a clear day, the Bannau Brycheiniog. The Round House and Naval Temple are late-Georgian oddities, built when a scenic breakfast pavilion could double as a patriotic monument.

Lord Nelson visited in 1802, which explains much of the naval symbolism. The practical reason to come is simpler: the view is excellent, and the walk up from town makes Monmouth feel properly placed in its border landscape.
