Sker House

Restored medieval grange isolated on the cliffs north of Rest Bay

Sker House sits in isolation on the cliffs about three kilometres north of Porthcawl, surrounded by rough grass, dunes, and the boundary of Royal Porthcawl Golf Club. The building is a 15th-century grange, much altered through the centuries, that fell almost into ruin during the 20th century before a long restoration project saved it in the 1990s and 2000s.

It is now a private residence and not normally open to the public, but the cliff path passes close to its boundary wall and the structure is striking against the empty horizon. Combine it with a walk along the South Wales Coast Path from Rest Bay — a flat hour's walk each way, with the Bristol Channel on your left and golf greens on your right.

A story
Sker House is the setting and title of R.D. Blackmore's 1872 novel 'The Maid of Sker', written by the same author as 'Lorna Doone'. The novel was inspired by the real story of Elizabeth Williams, an heiress of Sker House who was forcibly married against her wishes in 1768 and died in 1776 — her ghost is said to haunt the property.
