The Devil's Pulpit

The Devil's Pulpit is a limestone outcrop high on the English side of the Wye, reached by a stiff climb from Tintern. The reward is the famous view back across the valley to Tintern Abbey, small and pale among the trees.

The name comes from a local legend in which the Devil preached down at the monks, trying and failing to tempt them from their order. The walk is muddy in wet weather, but it is the best way to understand the valley setting.
