Books

The Bahamas has not generated a large literary tradition, but a few books stand out for travelers.

Hemingway's time in Bimini in the 1930s shows up in Islands in the Stream (1970), his posthumously published novel set largely on "Bimini" — a thinly veiled version of the island where he fished and drank for stretches of the mid-30s. It's not his best work, but it captures the light and the pace of the place.

For practical sailing and cruising, the Yachtsman's Guide to the Bahamas (Tropic Isle Publishers) has been updated regularly for decades and remains the standard reference for boaters.

Naturalists will find Reef Fish Identification: Tropical Pacific less useful than the Caribbean equivalent — pick up Paul Humann's Reef Fish Identification: Florida, Caribbean, Bahamas instead, the standard field guide for underwater identification.
