San Pedro is the main settlement on Ambergris Caye and Belize's most visited tourist town. Its three parallel streets — Front Street, Middle Street, and Back Street — are the commercial and social core of the island. Golf carts are the primary transport; there are very few cars on the island. The sandy streets lined with guesthouses, restaurants, bars, and dive shops have a ramshackle, unpretentious charm.
The waterfront on the east side of Front Street is where the action is: piers extending into the turquoise water, beach bars with hammocks and cold Belikins, and dive boats loading up in the early morning. The town has grown considerably in recent decades and now has supermarkets, banks, ATMs, and a reasonable range of accommodation. It is busier and more developed than Caye Caulker to the south, but the reef access is incomparably better.
