Foxy's Tamarind Bar

Foxy's Tamarind Bar in Great Harbour is the most famous bar in Jost Van Dyke and one of the most celebrated in the entire Caribbean. The proprietor, Philicianno "Foxy" Callwood, is a living legend — he plays guitar, writes calypso lyrics about his guests on the spot, and has been receiving visitors here since 1968. The walls are covered in business cards, pennants, and trinkets left by decades of passing sailors.

The food is good by island standards — fresh fish, lobster when available, the usual rum-based drinks. But people come for the atmosphere and for Foxy himself. If you visit on a regular day rather than a New Year's Eve, you may well get a personal performance. He is not always there, but the bar runs fine without him.

A story
Foxy's New Year's Eve party draws thousands of sailors and yachtspeople to this tiny bay every 31 December, making Great Harbour one of the most improbable party venues on the planet. Foxy Callwood — the proprietor, guitarist, and sometime-calypso poet — built his bar from scratch in 1968 and it became famous largely by word of mouth passed among the sailing community.
