Bitter End Yacht Club

The original BVI sailing resort, at the eastern end of North Sound, accessible only by boat

The Bitter End Yacht Club is one of the most famous sailing resorts in the Caribbean. It sits on a steep wooded hillside at the eastern end of North Sound, with no road access — the only way in is by boat. It opened in 1973 as a low-key clubhouse for visiting sailors and has grown into a full resort, though it still keeps a strong sailing focus and a slightly bohemian atmosphere.

The Bitter End was effectively destroyed by Hurricane Irma in September 2017 and rebuilt over several years. The current incarnation opened in 2022, with restored cottages, the original Clubhouse Restaurant, a sailing school with the fleet of dinghies, Hobie Cats and small keelboats that members can use freely, a dive operation, and the famous Quarterdeck Bar overlooking the anchorage. The restaurant is well-regarded and is open to non-residents on a reservation basis.

Day visitors arrive by water taxi from Gun Creek (5 minutes by ferry from Leverick Bay), or by tying up to one of the moorings off the resort. The shoreline coral garden in front of the resort is excellent for snorkelling. The summit walk above the resort gives one of the best views of North Sound.
