North Sound

The wide, reef-sheltered sound at the northern end of Virgin Gorda, the BVI's principal sailing destination

North Sound is the large, almost-enclosed bay at the northern end of Virgin Gorda — protected by Virgin Gorda itself to the south, by Prickly Pear Island and Mosquito Island to the north, and by a string of reefs along its eastern edge. It is the largest sheltered anchorage in the British Virgin Islands and the most popular destination for BVI charter sailing. On any night in season there will be 200 or more boats moored in the sound.

The land around North Sound is mostly private resort enclaves, accessed only from the water. The Bitter End Yacht Club at the eastern end is the original BVI sailing resort, founded in the 1970s. Saba Rock is a tiny rocky islet with a single hotel and restaurant. Leverick Bay, on the south shore, has a marina, a chandlery, a small dive shop and a busy bar that hosts the Friday-night Jumbie Jamboree with stilt-walkers and a fire-eater. The private islands of Mosquito and Necker — the latter owned by Richard Branson — sit at the northern edge.

The only land access to North Sound is from Gun Creek, at the end of the paved road from Spanish Town. From there a free ferry crosses to Leverick Bay; the rest of the sound is reached by water taxi or your own boat. Swimming, snorkelling and small-boat sailing are all excellent — the reefs at the entrance to the sound provide first-class diving.
