Calgary's dining scene punches well above its size. The city's oil wealth and large immigrant communities have produced a restaurant culture that ranges from celebrated steakhouses to some of the best Vietnamese, Chinese, and Ethiopian food in western Canada. Beef is the local religion — Alberta beef is legitimately outstanding, and the city takes it seriously.
Stephen Avenue is the obvious starting point: the pedestrianised sandstone strip through downtown concentrates good restaurants within easy walking distance. The 17th Avenue SW corridor, known locally as the Red Mile, runs a strong second with a mix of independent bistros, wine bars, and international kitchens. Kensington, on the north bank of the Bow, is the neighbourhood for brunch and café culture.
The city has a good roster of long-running bistros and reliable neighbourhood spots alongside the steakhouses. The individual restaurant POIs on this section cover the range.
