Edmonton has a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system that runs from the northeast (NAIT) through downtown to the University of Alberta campus in Old Strathcona, continuing south and west. The route covers the main visitor destinations — Churchill Square is served by Central Station; the university and Old Strathcona are at the south end. Fares are integrated with the bus network.
Buses cover the rest of the city, including the West Edmonton Mall area, which is not on the LRT line. The bus system is functional but slow by North American standards; routes are infrequent and journeys take longer than equivalent car trips. Timetables are available through the ETS (Edmonton Transit Service) website and app.
Car rental is practical for visiting Fort Edmonton Park, the Aga Khan Garden, Elk Island National Park, and other destinations outside the central LRT corridor. The river valley road system is worth understanding before driving — the valley creates natural north-south barriers that channelled roads in specific places, and navigation is less intuitive than the city's grid suggests.
Cycling in the river valley system is excellent; the network of paved trails connects most of the central city parks and is segregated from motor traffic. Cycle hire is available from several providers in the downtown area and Old Strathcona. In winter the trails are groomed for cross-country skiing, which effectively transforms the cycling infrastructure into a ski network.
Rideshare services (Uber, Lyft) operate throughout the city and are the most convenient option for late-night travel or trips to destinations poorly served by transit.
