Rogers Place

Rogers Place is Edmonton's main indoor arena and home to the Edmonton Oilers, the NHL franchise that was home to Wayne Gretzky during the most dominant run in hockey history. The arena opened in 2016 as part of the Ice District development, bringing a modern sports and entertainment complex to what had been a quiet corner of downtown.

The arena seats about 18,500 for hockey and hosts major concerts and other events throughout the year. The surrounding Ice District — a development of hotels, restaurants, and bars around the arena — has become one of the busiest parts of downtown after dark, particularly on game nights from October through April.

If you are visiting during hockey season, an Oilers game is worth experiencing for the atmosphere alone. Edmonton takes its hockey seriously in the way that cities with long winters and successful sports histories tend to. Tickets are available through the team's website; standing room sections are cheaper and the view is still good.

A story
Rogers Place is home to the Edmonton Oilers, the team Wayne Gretzky brought four Stanley Cup championships between 1984 and 1988. Gretzky's number 99 was the first to be retired by the franchise and remains perhaps the most celebrated jersey in the history of hockey. The arena opened in 2016 and replaced Rexall Place, where Gretzky played his greatest seasons.
