Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is the reason Fort Macleod rises above an ordinary prairie town. For more than 6,000 years, Plains peoples drove bison over these cliffs, using deep knowledge of terrain, wind, herd behaviour, and ceremony.
The interpretive centre is built into the hillside, so the building almost disappears into the cliff it explains. Give it time: the exhibits are strong on Blackfoot culture as well as archaeology, and the short walk outside helps the scale of the place sink in.
