Fort Macleod

Southern Alberta heritage town near Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump and old NWMP history.

Fort Macleod is one of southern Alberta's better small-town stops, with a real historic spine and a UNESCO site close enough to shape the whole visit. It began as a North-West Mounted Police post, and that frontier history still gives the town its strongest identity.

The essential trip is Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, west of town, where the Blackfoot and other Plains peoples used the cliffs for thousands of years. In town, the Fort Museum covers the NWMP story, Historic Main Street preserves a handsome run of sandstone and brick buildings, and the Empress Theatre still anchors the centre.

Fort Macleod works well as a day from Lethbridge, Calgary, or Waterton country. It is small, but the combination of Blackfoot history, prairie policing, and intact main-street architecture is strong enough to justify the stop.
