Police Point Park

A wooded river-bottom park with walking trails and a nature centre

Police Point juts out into a meander of the South Saskatchewan River north of downtown. The bottomland here is cottonwood forest — old, gnarled trees that survive on the river's seasonal floods — with grassland on the higher benches and steep coulees climbing back up to the prairie. About fifteen kilometres of trail are laid out through the park, with maps at the trailheads.

The Nature Centre at the entrance is small but well done, with displays on the local wildlife: deer, beaver, porcupine, the migrating songbirds that move through in spring and autumn. Bring binoculars; the park is one of the better birding spots in southern Alberta. The trails are flat and accessible by most levels of fitness, and a loop of an hour or two gives a good cross-section of the habitats.
