Cariboo Lakes Fishing

The country around 100 Mile House holds more than 100 lakes within a 30-minute drive — small, clear, pine-rimmed lakes fed by snowmelt and generally uncrowded. Rainbow trout fishing is the main draw in summer, and several of the better lakes (Canim, Deka, and Bridge lakes are the most popular) have boat launches and basic camping. Ice fishing takes over in winter, when the same lakes freeze solid enough to drive a snowmobile onto.

The fishing here is not the wilderness experience you get in the far north, but it is accessible and productive. Licences are required and available in town. Fly fishing conditions are best in May and September; summer can see surface feeding slow down in the heat of the day. Local outfitters and guest ranches can arrange guided trips to the less-visited lakes.
