Widgeon Valley National Wildlife Area protects a quiet mix of marsh, creek, forest, and mountain-edge habitat at the northeastern edge of Metro Vancouver. It feels much wilder than its distance from Coquitlam suggests, partly because access often involves paddling or longer trail approaches rather than simply stepping out of a parking lot.
This is a nature outing for prepared visitors, not a casual city park. Go for birds, wetlands, and the sense of slipping behind the suburbs into the Fraser Valley's rougher green margins.
