Denman Island Arts Community and Studio Tour

Denman Island has more working artists per capita than almost anywhere in Canada — potters, painters, sculptors, weavers, and printmakers among them — and many keep studios that are open to visitors, either regularly or during organised events. The annual Denman Island Pottery Tour is the best-known of these, typically held in late summer, when a dozen or more potters open their studios for two weekends.

Even outside organised tour events, it is worth stopping at the local general store and asking which studios are currently open. Many artists welcome drop-in visitors throughout the summer. The work produced here tends to be practical and beautiful: functional pottery, woodwork, and textiles suited to island life. The quality is consistently high and prices are reasonable direct from the maker.

A story
Denman and neighbouring Hornby Island have one of the highest concentrations of artists per capita in Canada. The Gulf Islands drew artists and back-to-the-landers from the 1960s onward, and that community has persisted and grown. The annual pottery tour — one of several studio events on the island — began in the 1980s and became a template for similar events throughout the Gulf Islands.
