Gitanyow Historic Village

Historic Gitxsan village north of Kitwanga with an outstanding group of totem poles.

Gitanyow, formerly called Kitwancool, is about 15 kilometres north of Kitwanga on Highway 37. The village has one of British Columbia's most important groups of standing totem poles, some old enough that you can feel the difference between a living village site and a curated museum display.

Go slowly and respectfully. The poles are not roadside decoration; they carry family histories and rights. If the interpretive centre is open, start there before walking through the village.
