Kitwanga, also called Gitwangak, is a small Gitxsan village in northern British Columbia where the Kitwanga River meets the Skeena. It is easy to treat it as just the turnoff for the Stewart-Cassiar Highway, but that would miss the reason to stop: this is one of the strongest places in the province for seeing Gitxsan history in the landscape.
The main anchor is Gitwangak Battle Hill, a fortified village site on a steep mound above the valley. Nearby Gitwangak village has old totem poles tied to the same families and stories. Farther north, Gitanyow Historic Village has another exceptional group of poles, enough to make the detour feel like a small open-air museum rather than a roadside stop.
The setting helps. Mountains close around the river valleys, and Kitwanga Mountain Provincial Park gives a steep but rewarding look across the Seven Sisters range. Come with time, respect, and a full tank; services are limited and the cultural sites are not theme-park attractions.
