Gitwangak Battle Hill

Fortified Gitxsan village site on a steep hill above the Kitwanga River valley.

Gitwangak Battle Hill, formerly known as Kitwanga Fort, preserves the site of a fortified Gitxsan village used from the mid-1700s into the 1800s. The hill looks modest from the road, but the position makes sense as soon as you climb it: the mound commands the Kitwanga River valley, and defenders could watch the movement of people, trade, and enemies below.

Interpretive signs explain the palisaded village and the defensive system, including logs that could be rolled downhill against attackers. Combine it with the Gitwangak poles nearby; the two sites belong to the same story.
