Englishman River Falls Provincial Park

Englishman River Falls Provincial Park sits just inland from Parksville and offers easy access to a pair of attractive waterfalls on a clear, fast-running river. The lower falls are the most dramatic — the river drops about ten metres into a plunge pool surrounded by mossy rock — while the upper falls are calmer and popular for swimming in summer. A trail connects the two in under half an hour.

The park is popular with families and makes a good half-day trip from town. In winter the falls run fuller and the forest is at its most atmospheric. Camping is available at the park's small campground, though Rathtrevor Beach fills first and these sites are easier to get in July and August.

A story
The Englishman River's Halkomelem name, K̓wal̓uxw, predates any English presence on Vancouver Island by thousands of years. The river's current name comes from an English settler who drowned crossing it in the 1860s — a sobering origin for a provincial park that today hosts pleasant summer picnics beside the same water.
