Cape Merry

Cannon battery ruins at the tip of the peninsula overlooking Hudson Bay

Cape Merry is the rocky promontory at the northern tip of the Churchill peninsula, 2 km from town on a walkable trail along the river. The crumbling remains of an 18th-century cannon battery built to defend the river mouth still stand here, with a single cannon pointing at the water. The views across to Prince of Wales Fort on the opposite shore and out over Hudson Bay are wide and excellent.

In summer the cape is a good spot for watching beluga whales in the estuary below and shorebirds on the rocks. The walk out from town takes about 30 minutes on a clear path that follows the bank of the Churchill River. No charge, no facilities — just open tundra and sky.
