Churchill is one of the most remote towns in Canada. It is not connected to the road network — there is no highway linking it to the south. You arrive by air or train.
By air: Calm Air and Perimeter Airlines fly scheduled services from Winnipeg. The flight takes about two hours. Fares can be high, particularly during bear season; book as far in advance as possible.
By train: Via Rail's Hudson Bay service runs from Winnipeg to Churchill, a distance of roughly 1,700 km. The journey takes about 36 hours in each direction. The train runs twice weekly and offers sleeping car berths and a dining car. It is a genuine adventure in itself, crossing boreal forest and eventually open tundra. Delays are common — the track crosses muskeg and is subject to washouts. In 2017 the line was severely damaged by floods and was closed for two years; it has since been rebuilt, but the service remains vulnerable.
In winter, an ice road sometimes connects Churchill to Thompson and the south, but this is unreliable and used mainly for freight.
