The MV Ithaka is the rusting skeleton of a 250-foot merchant vessel that grounded on the shore of Hudson Bay during a storm and was never refloated. The wreck lies on the beach within walking distance of Churchill, visible from the road that runs along the waterfront. Depending on sea conditions and the season, you can walk out to it across the tidal flats.
The ship is a stark, photogenic reminder of how unforgiving Hudson Bay can be — and of the real costs of Churchill's isolation and dependence on sea freight. In autumn, polar bears are frequently seen in the area. Go with a guide during bear season.
