Churchill sits within the auroral oval, the belt of sky where the northern lights are most consistently active. From late November through April, a clear night almost guarantees a display; January through March are the best months when darkness lasts for 16 hours. Unlike many northern lights destinations, you don't need to drive hours from town — the aurora is visible right from Churchill's streets.
Tour operators run snowmobile and dog-sled excursions out onto the tundra for darker skies and better photography, but even watching from the parking lot of your hotel, with the lights rippling green and occasionally red overhead, is extraordinary. Churchill's combination of reliable aurora, accessible location, and nearby wildlife makes it one of the world's great winter destinations.
