Fortin du Petit-Sault

Rebuilt 1841 blockhouse overlooking the Madawaska and Saint John river junction.

Fortin du Petit-Sault is a small blockhouse with a big border story. The original was built during the Aroostook boundary dispute, when Britain and the United States were still arguing over where this part of the map should be divided.

The reconstructed fort is simple, but the view over the river junction explains why it was placed here. It is the most direct way to understand Edmundston as a frontier town rather than a highway service stop.
