Edmundston sits in the far northwest of New Brunswick, where the Madawaska and Saint John rivers meet Maine and Quebec. Many travellers know it only as a highway stop, but the city has a stronger identity than that: French-speaking, Brayon, borderland, and proud of its odd little Republic of Madawaska mythology.
This is not one of New Brunswick's great scenic towns. It passes the one-day test because the pieces are specific: the New Brunswick Botanical Garden, the Fortin du Petit-Sault, river trails, and a local beer scene that feels more rooted than generic.
Use Edmundston as a real stop if you are driving between Quebec and the Maritimes, not just a place to refuel. A few hours in the gardens and old riverfront will tell you more about this corner of Canada than another stretch of Trans-Canada Highway.
