JT Cheeseman Provincial Park, about 25 kilometres north of Port aux Basques, preserves a stretch of the Newfoundland southwest coast with sand beaches, dunes, coastal pond systems, and bog habitat. It's an excellent place for birdwatching — migratory shorebirds stop here in significant numbers in late summer and autumn, and the barachois ponds attract ducks, herons, and occasional rarities.
The park has basic facilities including a small campground. The beaches are quiet and exposed — this is not a resort beach, it's a wild Newfoundland coast, with cold water and real weather. Wildflowers in the bog habitat in June and July are worth the stop on their own.
