Ovayok Territorial Park

Ovayok Territorial Park lies east of Cambridge Bay, where a group of rounded hills rises from the otherwise wide, low tundra. The main hill, Uvayuq or Mount Pelly, is only about 200 metres high, but in this landscape it feels like a landmark.

Come for a tundra walk, muskox watching if you are lucky, and a better sense of the open country around Cambridge Bay. Go with local advice on weather, transport, and wildlife; distances here are easy to underestimate from a map.

A story
Inuit tradition explains the three hills as a starving family of giants crossing Victoria Island: the father Uvayuq, the son Inuuhuktu, and the mother Amaaqtuq. The story gives the park a human shape that is easy to remember once you have seen the hills from the road.
