Ferris Provincial Park

Ferris Provincial Park sits on the south edge of town along the gorge cut by the Trent River. Its centrepiece is the high suspension footbridge that spans the rapids at Ranney Falls — the most photographed view in the area and a satisfying short walk from the day-use parking. The park has 12 km of marked hiking trails through mixed hardwood forest, with several lookouts over the river.

Camping is available from May to October — about 100 sites, a mix of electrical and unserviced, plus a few rustic cabins. The park is popular with paddlers using the Trent-Severn Waterway, and there is a small launch site. Day-use is open year-round; the trails are good for snowshoeing in winter. Entry is the standard Ontario Parks fee, with day-use passes available at the gate.

A story
The 91-metre Ranney Falls suspension bridge swings high over the gorge of the Trent River. Cross it slowly — the bridge bounces gently underfoot, and the drop to the rapids below is sudden and considerable.
