Chez Piggy

Kingston's most beloved restaurant, in a limestone stable from 1806

Chez Piggy has been Kingston's most celebrated restaurant since 1979, when it was opened by Zal Yanovsky — formerly of the Lovin' Spoonful — and his partner Rose Richardson in a limestone horse stable built in 1806. The building is in the restored Springer Market Square complex, a short walk from the waterfront. The menu is eclectic and changes seasonally, drawing on global influences while using local Ontario ingredients. It is reliably good and reliably busy.

The stone walls, exposed beams, and courtyard setting give it an atmosphere that newer restaurants in the city cannot match. Reservations are recommended for dinner. There is also a bakery attached — Pan Chancho — that supplies restaurants across the city and is worth a visit on its own.
