Afghanistan Repatriation Memorial

This memorial at CFB Trenton commemorates the 158 Canadian Forces members who died during the Afghanistan mission from 2002 to 2011. The repatriation ceremonies — when fallen soldiers were returned home through this base — gave rise to the "Highway of Heroes," the stretch of Highway 401 between Trenton and Toronto that crowds of civilians lined for every cortege.

The memorial is sited on the base's public-accessible area near the Air Force Museum. Its curved granite wall is inscribed with the names of the fallen, and the design incorporates imagery from the military and from Afghanistan itself. It is a moving and well-considered piece of public memorial architecture.
