Art Gallery of Algoma

A well-regarded regional gallery in downtown Sault Ste. Marie, with particular strengths in early 20th-century Canadian landscape painting and contemporary Indigenous art. The Group of Seven connection is genuine and substantive — Algoma's wilderness was a key destination for the painters, and the works here reflect that relationship directly.

The gallery also mounts rotating exhibitions and has an active program of local and touring shows. It is a small but focused collection, manageable in an hour, and worth visiting if you have any interest in Canadian art history. Admission is modest.

A story
The Algoma region inspired the Group of Seven's most dramatic landscapes — Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, and Franz Johnston all painted here repeatedly in the 1920s, arriving by boxcar on the Algoma Central Railway. The gallery holds a strong collection of their work alongside contemporary Indigenous art from the region.
